Secretome Therapy for Osteoarthritis Enters EU Clinical Push

Eliquent Life Sciences has joined ExoCordOA, a €13 million, five-year Horizon Europe consortium coordinated by Exogenus Therapeutics to advance extracellular vesicle-enriched secretome therapies toward clinical use, beginning with osteoarthritis. The program funds Phase I and II development of lead candidate EXO-101 as a potential disease-modifying treatment while building manufacturing, potency-assay and regulatory standards for secretome medicines. Osteoarthritis affects roughly 8% of the global population, and no disease-modifying drug is currently approved.

Key Points

  • €13m EU consortium backs EXO-101 secretome therapy through Phase II
  • Target: first disease-modifying osteoarthritis treatment; none currently approved
  • Program builds manufacturing, potency and regulatory standards for secretome medicines

Longevity Analysis

Cell-free secretome products shift regenerative medicine from transplanted cells to the signaling cargo those cells release — a more controllable intervention for tissue that repairs poorly, such as articular cartilage. Joint degeneration erodes the capacity for load-bearing movement, which in turn constrains metabolic health, circulation and independence across later decades, making structural repair a longevity question rather than an orthopedic one. The consortium's emphasis on standardized potency assays and a defined regulatory pathway determines whether these therapies become reproducible clinical tools or remain inconsistent biologics marketed ahead of their evidence.
