Macrophage Cell Therapy Targets Liver Fibrosis in First Trial

Resolution Therapeutics will present interim Phase I/II data on RTX001, an engineered macrophage therapy for end-stage liver disease, at the AASLD meeting in November 2026. The EMERALD study is evaluating safety, tolerability and early efficacy in patients recovering from hepatic decompensation at centers in the UK and Spain. The approach targets fibrosis and inflammation in an organ with substantial but often exhausted regenerative capacity.

Key Points

  • Engineered macrophage therapy RTX001 enters first-in-human testing for cirrhosis
  • EMERALD trial enrolls end-stage patients after recent hepatic decompensation
  • Preclinical data show anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory effects

Longevity Analysis

The liver sits at the intersection of clearance, metabolic regulation and immune signaling, and fibrotic scarring represents one of the clearest examples of repair machinery turning against the tissue it was meant to restore. Cell therapies that recruit immune cells to resolve rather than propagate fibrosis address the breakdown directly, rather than compensating around it. For end-stage disease the practical question remains whether restored function translates into durable capacity, a distinction that matters far more than biomarker movement alone.
