Dementia AI Tools Face National Validation Hub at UCLA

UCLA Health has received a five-year, $25 million National Institute on Aging grant to lead APEX-ADRD, a national program evaluating artificial intelligence tools used in the diagnosis and management of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Rather than developing new technology, the program is designed to determine which existing tools perform reliably in real-world care, and to distribute validated evaluation and safety-monitoring standards across the NIA network.

Key Points

  • NIA funds UCLA-led national testing hub for dementia AI tools
  • Evaluation frameworks and safety standards shared across NIA network nationally
  • Tools tested across diverse populations using full UC system data

Longevity Analysis

Cognitive decline detection sits upstream of nearly every meaningful intervention in dementia care, and the accuracy of the instrument doing the detecting determines whether that window is used or missed. An algorithm trained on one population and applied to another can systematically misread the signals the brain sends about its own deterioration, generating false reassurance or unwarranted alarm — both of which distort clinical decisions for years. Infrastructure that validates these tools before deployment protects the integrity of early cognitive assessment, which is the practical foundation for any strategy aimed at preserving neurological function across the later decades.
